5,000 Books, 5 New Schools, & the Important Clothesline

The Malawi Early Literacy Team recently returned from the 2019 trip to Malawi, Africa. It was a unique trip including a first-time traveler, Peyton Hnyla, along with seasoned travelers to Malawi: Heather White, Patricia Constable, and Carol Stevens. Experiencing Malawi schools, children, and their teachers through Peyton's eyes renewed the passion for our work. Emotions run deep when working in one of the ten poorest countries in the world. Each day brought joy, laughter, and tears.

2019 Accomplishments:

• • Five thousand readers have been added to our library system in Malawi. Thanks to a recent Rotary Grant.
• • We are proud to announce we have added five new schools, with a satellite library in one of them, in the Mzimba Region.
• • 27 Primary Teachers attended our training in the many uses of the Rotary Readers.
• • We introduced our teachers to the concept of using a simple clothesline, strung across their classroom, bringing print to life in their teaching.
• • This was a great success as we saw teachers putting this into practice during our school visits.
• • M.E.L.T. proudly serves 20 schools and their teachers in the Northern Region of Malawi.
